Beta-alanine is a component of the dipeptide carnosine (ß-alanyl-L-histidine) naturally present in skeletal muscle, particularly in fast-twitch type II muscle fibers. Under natural conditions, carnosine buffers the drop in pH associated with the formation of lactic acid during exercise, thereby delaying muscle fatigue and allowing for longer and more demanding training sessions. Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is formed by combining L-arginine with alpha-ketoglutarate – an intermediate metabolite of the Krebs Cycle – the metabolic pathway that leads to the formation of the energy substrate for working muscles – ATP (ATP – adenosine triphosphate) molecules.
